Gerik Fon-Revutzky,
bassoon and contrabassoon, is an active freelancer throughout Chicagoland,
Milwaukee
and Indiana.
Gerik is the contrabassoonist with Rockford Symphony,
Wisconsin Philharmonic Orchestra,
Fox Valley Symphony and
Bel Canto Chorus Orchestra.
He also performs on both bassoon and contrabassoon with numerous orchestras,
including: Green Bay Symphony,
Festival City Symphony,
Kenosha Symphony, Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra
and is on the sub list of the Milwaukee Symphony
Orchestra. Gerik has performed with the Civic
Orchestra of Chicago under the batons of Pierre Boulez and Daniel Barenboim.
Gerik also enjoys the opportunity to perform chamber music when time permits.
Gerik has toured and performed extensively both
nationally and internationally including Russia,
Finland,
England
and Canada.
Gerik earned his Bachelor’s degree
at
California
State
University,
Sacramento
in Bassoon Performance with Secondary Emphasis in Orchestral Conducting.
While there he performed with the Liberace Woodwind
Quintet, a scholarship ensemble, and
won the concerto competition with Weber’s
Bassoon Concerto. Gerik
also was able to blend his saxophone & jazz background while playing on bassoon
with the jazz band on several occasions, in a Miles Davis tribute concert, as
well as a jazz piece written for him. In addition, Gerik served as the
Assistant Conductor for the opera productions of Puccini’s
Il Tritico, and Gian Carlo
Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief.
Gerik also worked as an Instrument Repair Apprentice to the Music Department’s
repair technician, learning how to perform repair and maintenance work on
numerous instruments, while concentrating on woodwinds. Gerik then went on
to earn his Master’s degree from Northwestern
University in Bassoon Performance with Secondary
Emphasis in Contrabassoon and Orchestral Conducting. Over the years Gerik
has participated in the performance of numerous World Premiers, as a member of
orchestras, chamber ensembles, woodwind quintets, duets, as well as a soloist on
both bassoon and contrabassoon in pieces written for him. Gerik’s major
teachers have included: Doug Huff, Susan Willoughby, Steve Dibner, and
Robert Barris; and he has performed in masterclasses with: Daniel
Matsukawa, Leonard Sharrow, Bernard Garfield, Mark Gigliotti, Judith LeClaire,
David McGill and Norman Herzberg. As a conductor Gerik has studied with:
Leo Eylar, Dr. Robert Halseth, Mariusj Smolij, and Victor Yampolsky. Gerik
has participated in the summer centers at Domaine
Forget and the Aspen
Music Festival. Gerik has also been included
in the International Who’s Who in Music and
Musicians’ Directory.
In addition to his busy performing
schedule Gerik is also an active teacher. He is currently on the faculty
of the University of St. Francis, Joliet Junior
College, Music Institute of Chicago,
Neuqua Valley High School, Metea Valley High School,
Schaumburg High School, Conant High School, Hoffman Estates High School, Maine
South High School,
and
Lake Forest High School. Gerik has
given masterclasses at
Western
Illinois
University,
CSUSacramento, and
Davis
High School.
During the summers of 2000-2006 Gerik was the bassoon instructor, Assistant
Manager and Head Librarian at the Luzerne Music
Center in New York State.
While there, Gerik made his professional acting debut playing the role of the
Soldier in Stravinsky’s Le Histoire du Soldat
with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra performing. Gerik has also
appeared on stage at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in its production of
The Merry Wives of Windsor,
playing bassoon as part of the on-stage band.
Gerik is a
founding member of the Chicagoland Bassoon Teachers Symposium, an organization
with the goal of becoming better teachers for our students. This
organization was founded in 2010, and while the
future of the organization is still in the planning phases, we hope this group
will serve both teachers and students in the Chicago area.
Gerik also has experience as a
Stage Manager and Arts Administrator, having worked in those capacities for a
number of years. During his studies for his undergraduate degree Gerik
served as a Stage and House Manager at CSUSacramento, and for its annual
Festival of New American Music (FENAM). Gerik later worked as the Head of
Patron Services for the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, while also helping to
order music for its season and serving as Operations Manager for its summer
performances. Most recently Gerik worked at his alma mater,
Northwestern
University,
as the Orchestra Program Administrator, a position which included serving as the
Orchestra Music Librarian.
